17th Century Life & Times is a living history, character role-playing, small skirmish & siege re-enactment group of about 120 members. The society was set up at the end of 2000 by Dennis & Gill Wraight who had been recreating the period for over 30 years. With the aim of being the most authentic and entertaining group covering the 17th century and the English Civil War period in particular, the group has earned its self a high reputation for accuracy, detail, educational value & friendliness.

As a group we have set ourselves exceptionally high standards, we only allow authentic items of clothing, footwear, glasses or utensils to be used; neither do we have cross-dressing. We are a family orientated group with many children who take an active role in our scenarios playing with 17th century toys or receiving schooling of the period in front of the public. The society is a very hands-on group and we actively encourage members of the public to come and talk to us or try things out. Added to this is the researched character role-playing, which many of our members assume for the duration of the day’s events, really bringing the times to life!

The society has many roles for anyone looking to join and is divided into several units. On the military side, there are two regiments, Sir Samuel Lukes (Parliamentarian) and Sir Allen Apsley’s (Royalist) along with the Trayne of Artillery who fight on either side. The civilians of the group belong to the Baggage Trayne, which includes the sutlery, where all the food is prepared, House-hold gentry and servants. There are many others who take on trades or characters based on detailed research such as an herbalist, bodgers, washer women, a scrivener, merchants, lawyers, magistrates, preachers & pedlars. The group operates on the premise that as long as you have the costume, equipment and have done the historical research you can have a go at what ever you like!

During the last seven years we have staged events for a number of organisations such as the National Trust, English Heritage, Monmouthshire County Council, The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, and events on behalf of Hounslow & Hillingdon Councils, The Royal Armouries, Leeds, and many private stately homes & castles across the UK.
